When emotional difficulties or conflicts with others remain unresolved, we may feel torn between what we want and what we think we should do. Ways of coping or relating to others that once worked may no longer help. We may also find it difficult to express affection or accept care in a close relationship.

Marriage and family therapy offers a space to explore how family experiences, life circumstances and cultural influences shape our needs, values and expectations. Working with a therapist, you can consider different ways to approach difficulties, develop more effective patterns of communication and interaction, and care for the relationships that matter to you.

Ms. Christina Li is a marriage and family therapist, a Clinical Fellow of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and a Certified Therapist of the Hong Kong Marriage and Family Therapy Association. She previously worked as a behavioural therapist for children. She holds a Master of Arts in Social Work (Family-centred Practice and Family Therapy) and a bachelor’s degree with honours in Counselling and Psychology.

Ms. Christina has provided individual and family counselling at various non-profit organisations for many years, supporting people with emotional difficulties and relationship concerns. She has also provided crisis counselling in situations involving suicidal thoughts, abuse and unplanned pregnancy. At local schools, she has offered individual, family and group counselling to help students facing emotional or behavioural difficulties, including school refusal. She works with parents to identify and put into practice more effective parenting approaches. She is currently a consultant to the Yuk Chi Resource Centre.

Marriage counselling helps couples facing difficulties in their relationship work through conflict, strengthen their connection and build a healthier, more fulfilling partnership.

Developed by American psychologist Dr. David Olson, PREPARE/ENRICH is a relationship assessment tool for couples preparing for marriage and those who are already married. It explores important aspects of their relationship, such as communication, conflict resolution and shared expectations. Used alongside approximately six counselling sessions, it can help couples recognise their strengths and identify areas for growth.

Starting premarital counselling well before the wedding—ideally around a year in advance—gives partners time to understand each other’s personalities and family backgrounds more deeply, and to discuss plans and potential challenges in married life. Couples who are already married are also encouraged to seek support before difficulties become more entrenched. Assessment and counselling can help them communicate more openly and develop more effective ways to resolve conflict.

The way family members relate to one another can influence an individual’s behaviour and well-being. Difficulties that appear to affect one person may also reflect patterns within the family.

Family therapy looks at concerns from a family systems perspective. Through therapy, individuals and families can explore new ways of understanding their situation, communicating and responding to challenges together.
